Funerals

Ring us at any hour. We will help whether or not your family were churchgoers.

We are sorry for your loss.

If somebody has died, ring the parish on 01632 960 118 at any hour. If nobody answers the office, the presbytery number is on the answerphone and Fr Michael would rather be woken than not called.

Before the funeral

Most families contact their funeral director first, and the director will usually ring us. Either way round is fine.

Fr Michael or Deacon Peter will come and see you, at home or wherever suits, to talk about the person who has died and to plan the service. There is no charge for this and no hurry.

The service

A Catholic funeral is normally a Requiem Mass, though a simpler service without Mass is also possible and is sometimes more appropriate. We will talk it through with you.

You are welcome to choose readings, hymns and music, and family members may read or speak. If nobody feels able to, that is entirely usual and we will do it.

If the person was not Catholic

We can still help. Speak to us and we will find the right thing, whether that is here or somewhere better suited.

Burial and ashes

The churchyard is closed for new burials, but there is space in the garden of remembrance for the interment of ashes, and a book of remembrance kept in the Lady Chapel.

Afterwards

The parish room is available at no charge for refreshments after a funeral. Bereavement is not something we expect anyone to manage alone, and the SVP visits anyone who would like it, for as long as they would like it.

Safeguarding

St Cuthbert's is committed to the safeguarding of children, young people and vulnerable adults. If you have a concern about the safety of anyone, whether it happened here or elsewhere, please speak to one of the people below. You will be listened to and taken seriously, and you do not need to be certain before you say something.
