The roof appeal passes £40,000

We are now a little over forty per cent of the way to the £96,000 we need, seven months after starting.

The total stood at £41,250 on Sunday morning, which is a long way from where we were in February and rather further than most of us expected to be by now.

The summer fair brought in £3,180, the largest amount it has ever raised. A single anonymous gift in June accounted for £5,000. And a steady stream of standing orders, most of them for ten or twenty pounds a month, has quietly done more than any of the events.

People keep apologising for giving small amounts. They should not. The standing orders are what will finish this.

There is still £54,750 to find, and the architect has been clear that the work needs to start before next winter rather than after it. If you have been meaning to set something up and have not got round to it, Angela can do it in the office in about five minutes.

What happens next

The faculty application has gone to the diocese and we expect a decision in the autumn. Scaffolding would go up in the spring, and the work itself should take about ten weeks.

The church stays open throughout. There will be a certain amount of noise and the north aisle will be closed for part of it, but no Mass will be cancelled.
